GUN SHOT HOTSPOTS:
MARÉ AND COMPLEXO DO ALEMÃO

10,000 people have been shot during law enforcement operations in Greater Rio de Janeiro since 2016. That means that around 4 people have been shot each day, on average. It is to say that public funds are used on a daily basis to put children, teens, mothers and fathers in the firing line.

Law enforcement actions and operations account for 59% of those shot in the metropolitan area of Rio. How does one feel living in the midst of so many clashes? Has that public security policy made cities any safer?

Among the 10,000 people shot, there were 828 law enforcement officers, 55 children and 244 teenagers. Those people are not just numbers: the lives of thousands of families have been torn apart. Security policies must be put into place to save lives and that will not be accomplished through more shooting incidents.

716 people were victims of stray bullets discharged during law enforcement operations.

137 of those were shot inside their homes and 10 were shot inside schools.

98,4% of those shot did not have their race/ethnicity identified. The graph next to it shows the data for those cases where it was possible to identify. The underreporting of this information is much higher than in other indicators, such as age and gender. The race/ethnicity of victims of armed violence cannot be omitted in public debate.
